Lesson Plan: Understanding Perimeter, Area and Volume - Grade Four - Grade 04
Grade:04
Summary:Students are introduced to the measures perimeter, area and volume. They read contexts using the terms and begin to develop meaning for each measure. Additional contexts are presented and the definition of each measure is clarified. Students should recognize perimeter as ?surrounding?, area as ?covering? and volume as ?filling?.

Standard: Measurement
Benchmark: C. Develop common referents for units of measure for length, weight, volume (capacity) and time to make comparisons and estimates.
Indicator: 2. Demonstrate and describe perimeter as surrounding and area as covering a two-dimensional shape, and volume as filling a three-dimensional object.

Standard: Measurement
Benchmark: D. Identify appropriate tools and apply counting techniques for measuring side lengths, perimeter and area of squares, rectangles, and simple irregular two-dimensional shapes, volume of rectangular prisms, and time and temperature.
