Lesson Plan: Declaration of Independence and the Constitution - Grade Five - Grade 05

Summary:This multiple-day lesson is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the significance of the Declaration of Independence. The second part focuses on the significance of the U.S. Constitution. The students will read a rewritten version of the Declaration of Independence, create a set of pictures illustrating the Preamble of the Constitution and create a version of the Declaration of Independence in the form of a song, a poem, comic strip or picture book. Students also will write a constitution for a new country modeled after the U.S. Constitution. Many graphic organizers will be used to help students understand the significance of these two documents.
